Employee Recognition Programs

The Value of Recognition

Two basic human needs are to feel appreciated and a sense of accomplishment. Companies that help fill these needs in their employees through employee recognition are able to reap numerous benefits. Recognition programs that are well conceived and implemented have been shown to increase shareholder returns (Watson Wyatt study) staff retention and morale and motivate associates to increase sales and improve customer service, operational performance.

A Perceived Lack of Recognition by Employees

Giving recognition is not rocket science but recognition has consistently been the lowest ranked area on employee surveys of our potential clients. Many organizations operate on the assumption that their associates know how much their work is valued. It's the "no news is good news" theory. If your supervisor has not said anything negative, then you assume that everything is fine. It is a common but erroneous management philosophy that can cause serious consequences to the organization over time. In other cases, managers feel they give recognition but don't know how to do it effectively. This leads to a gap in the perception between managers and employees of the quantity and quality of recognition given.

Two Major Forms of Recognition: Informal and Formal

Romano & Sanfilippo assists companies with implementation of two types of recognition programs to recognize your employees: informal and formal. In the informal program, we get your managers looking for opportunities to show genuine appreciation to associates through immediate, positive feedback. This is done when the job has been done right, done ahead of schedule or when the associate has gone beyond that which is normal and expected. Managers follow loosely structured guidelines to recognize associates for any number of positive behaviors such as making a sale, appeasing an irate customer, going the extra mile for a customer or co-worker, staying late to fill a big order or any improved performance, especially for employees with marginal performance. Recognizing an associate informally can be done both verbally or in writing but should be spontaneous and unexpected.

Whereas informal recognition is more ad hoc and based on loose criteria, Romano & Sanfilippo can also assist you in creating a formal recognition program to provide the opportunity for employees to be recognized at designated times throughout the year (usually quarterly and annually) for achieving results based on pre-established criteria. This usually include symbols of achievement such as plaques and framed certificates, engraved desk clocks and a special club open only to those who meet its criteria. For most organizations, an "achievement club" is a key vehicle for recognizing associates. Honoring the associates is usually done at formal presentations and events in front of peers, spouses or other significant stakeholders. Criteria for being inducted into a "President's Club" usually includes meeting sales, customer service and/or operational goals for the quarter and the year.
